School of Mathematical Sciences


The Department of Mathematics of Beijing Normal University was founded in 1922, its predecessor being the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the Beijing Higher Normal School founded in 1915. The university established the Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Education in 1983 and the School of Mathematical Sciences in 2004. The school now has a faculty of 74 people, including 31 professors and 24 associate professors. Among them, 90% hold doctoral degrees. In particular, there are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, and 5 specially appointed professors and 1 lecturing professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, 4 winners of the State Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 selected personnel of the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, and 7 selected personnel of Trans or New Century Personnel Training Scheme.

The School of Mathematical Sciences gained the doctoral degree granting rights for pure mathematics, the theory of probability and the mathematical statistics in 1981 and applied mathematics in 1986. In 1988, pure mathematics, the theory of probability and the mathematical statistics were rated as the national key disciplines. In 1990, the first post-doctoral flow station of BNU was establish here. In 1996, mathematics became a key construction discipline of the country’s 211 Project. In 1997, the school became a national scientific personnel training base. In 1998, mathematics gained the right for the first-level discipline for doctorate degree granting. In 2001, the faculty for the theory of probability was awarded innovative group of the national natural science fund. In 2002, the theory of probability and the mathematical statistics were once again rated as the national key disciplines. In 2005, mathematics entered the science and technology platform of the national 985Project. In 2006, the key laboratory of the Ministry of Education of mathematics and complex system was certified by experts and is now under construction. In 2007, the state key disciplines of the theory of probability and mathematical statistics was successfully evaluated, the pure mathematics was rated as the state key discipline. Mathematics was rated as the first-level state key discipline. The school also offers eight post-graduate programs including pure mathematics, computational mathematics, the theory of probability and mathematical statistics, applied mathematics, curriculum and teaching (of mathematics),the history of science and technology (of mathematics) computer software and theory, controlling theory and controlling project. The school includes the department of mathematics, statistics and financial mathematics, and two majors for undergraduates, including mathematics and applied mathematics and statistics. There are nine teaching offices, including offices for analysis, algebra, geometry, formula, the theory of probability, mathematical statistics, computational mathematics, mathematical education and the history of mathematics. There is also a magazine editorial board for Mathematical Bulletin. There are seven research centers of random mathematics, modern mathematical analysis, scientific computing, dynamic system in the institute of mathematics and mathematical education research. There are also two laboratories for complex system real-time control, date statistics and analysis.

During 93, the School of Mathematical Sciences has produced 6640 graduates. During the past twenty-odd years, 216 PHDs and 898 postgraduates have graduated. According to incomplete statistics, of the 216 PHDs, two have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Science Academy; three have been specially appointed as professors of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, six have won the state Outstanding Youth Fund, four have received the state natural science award, three have been named the state-level outstanding contributors, two have been elected as the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, two has been selected the excellent young teachers supporting project of the Ministry of Education, seven have been selected Trans or New Century Personnel Training Project of the Ministry of Education, two papers have been selected as the national one hundred top doctoral dissertations, and two PHDs have been nominated in the national one hundred top doctoral dissertations.
